Cultural Highlights of Japan with Baseball & Sumo


Saturday, March 9, 2019  to  Friday, March 22, 2019

Join us to experience the culture and traditional sports of Japan. This fourteen day trip will let you see the history and splendor of Japan. With this we pair Japan's de facto national sport (although this is not an official status) the enthralling and at times bewildering spectacle that is sumo, with the excitement of the undisputed king of team sports in Japan which is is baseball. NPB games and two MLB games with the Oakland A's and Seattle Mariners.


Day: 1 - Sat, March 9, 2019
Arrival in San Francisco by 4:00 PM on Sat, March 9

Trip Reception
A trip reception is included to give you a chance to meet and greet the host and the other travelers. The reception includes a meal and non-alcoholic beverages.

Depart from San Francisco to Osaka
Airfare to Japan is not included. Contact your STAT travel coordinator for flight booking details (United Airlines Flight 035 Departs San Francisco 11:25am (3/10/19) and Arrives Osaka Kansai at 3:35pm the next day).

If you prefer to meet the group in Osaka, we can subtract the San Francisco Hotel / Trip Reception.

Enjoy a tour of the stadium lead by a retired Hanshin Tigers Player.

Ferry to Miyajima for sightseeing

Itsukushima Shrine and Fude No Sato Calligraphy Museum
Sightseeing of Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its floating "Torii". You will also visit the Fude No Sato Calligraphy Museum (pending if it reopens after typhoon damage), where you will receive a lesson and try your hand with this ancient art form.

Afternoon Touring of Hiroshima
Including the Peace Memorial Park and A-Bomb Dome Museum.

Travel to Kyoto by Shinkansen (bullet train)

Travel to Nara for sightseeing
Nara was the capitol of Japan from 710 to 784, which is known as the Nara Period in Japanese history. It is still a center for Japanese culture, history and art.

Kasuga Taisha Shinto Shrine and Todai-ji Temple
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara. The interior is famous for its many bronze lanterns, as well as the many stone lanterns that lead up the shrine. Todai-ji Temple, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Historic Monuments of Nara. This Buddhist temple complex is home to the world's largest bronze statue of Buddha, known to the Japanese simply as Daibutsu. Sika deer, regarded as messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion, roam the grounds freely.

Travel to Osaka

Sumo Wrestling
This uniquely Japanese sport has a history spanning centuries. Many ancient traditions have been preserved in sumo, and even today the sport includes many ritual elements, such as the use of salt purification, from the days when sumo was used in the Shinto religion. Life as a wrestler is highly regimented, with rules regulated by the Japan Sumo Association. Most sumo wrestlers are required to live in communal sumo training stables, where all aspects of their daily lives are dictated by strict tradition.

Touring of Kyoto
Visit Nijo-Castle, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Heian Shinto Shrine and the Kyoto Handicraft Center for shopping. There will be time for lunch on own.

Travel to Osaka

NPB Pre-Season Game
Enjoy a game at a local stadium (TBD). Return to Kyoto after the game.

Day: 9 - Sun, March 17, 2019
Shinkansen (bullet train) to Odawara

Sightseeing of Hakone National Park
First enjoy a scenic cruise on Lake Ashi, then visit the Owakudani Valley and Mt. Komagatake with its cable car ride.

Day: 10 - Mon, March 18, 2019
Travel to Tokyo

Sightseeing in Kamakura
You will see the Great Image of Budda, Komachi Shopping Street and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shinto Shrine. Lunch will be included today. In the afternoon, return to Tokyo with the rest of the day free to relax on own.

Day: 12 - Wed, March 20, 2019
Japan's Baseball Hall of Fame Museum Tour at the Tokyo Dome
Including a lecture with a local baseball celebrity (celebrity TBA).

Lunch on own at Tokyo Dome City

Tour the Meiji Shinto Shrine
Meiji Shrine, located in Shibuya, Tokyo, is the Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken.

Experience Ginza
One of the busiest street in Japan with its high fashion boutiques and department stores. Here you will experience lessons in Japanese culture including Sado (Tea Ceremony) and Batto (Sword Play).

Visit Tsukiji Outer Market. Next travel to Hama Rikyu to enjoy a Sumida River Cruise. After some free time for lunch on own, visit Asakusa Kannon Temple with its shopping arcade "Nakamise."
